Mazda Philippines has launched the 2022 CX-5, now with a turbocharged powertrain. According to Bermaz Auto Philippines, the Japanese brand’s exclusive distributor for the country, the new CX-5 with turbo power is an ode to enthusiasts as it aims to fill an empty space in the local market. Does the Mazda CX-5 AWD Turbo have what it takes to compete in its segment?
Exterior
While the powertrain is a new addition to the lineup, style is definitely a recurring theme with the Mazda CX-5. The refresh sees a lightly updated exterior with the headlining change being the addition of the new Zircon Sand color that is reminiscent of the Platinum Quartz Metallic color that’s available for the brand’s sedans and hatchbacks. On top of that, the CX-5 can now come in the brand’s gorgeous Polymetal Gray Metallic color.

We’re still greeted with the Kodo Design of Mazda in every panel of the exterior. Flowing lines and modern textures keep the model in line with the rest of the models in Mazda’s stable, but the subtle details keep things fresh with an updated headlamp array, body-colored cladding, and a rear taillight that also matches the shape of the front LED DRLs. In addition to that, Mazda fitted the model with new front and rear bumpers plus a new three-dimensional grille and new 19-inch alloy wheels.

Otherwise, we’re still seeing the same gorgeous overall design that Mazda fans have come to love throughout the years. Now updated and with a striking monotone look (no more plastic cladding to distract the eye), the model exudes new levels of refinement aod sophistication that’s sure to turn a few heads and pick a few chequebooks clean of a few pages.
Interior and Technology
While the exterior receives some minor to major enhancements for the 2022 model year, the interior retains the same familiar layout that continues to give occupants a sense of luxury. Premium materials all over can still be found, and the touchpoints are largely the same as before. We’re still seeing an analog and digital gauge cluster that comprises of three cylinders, and a screen down the middle for more drive information.
The steering wheel is still that familiar and the dashboard retains the shape and design of its predecessor, as does its center console with the MZD Connect interface for the infotainment system. Speaking of which, we’re still seeing the same 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with a host of other familiar features we’ve come to expect from a vehicle like the CX-5 such as the i-ActivSense safety system that comes with driver attention alert, lane departure warning, and smart brake support along with a host of other features for safety.
What’s new for the 2022 year model are the updated seats which feature more support and the upgraded cabin insulation which will supposedly dampen more noise vibration and harshness while driving. Also, the interior can also come in a Deep Red Nappa leather interior, giving the crossover a two-tone look.
Power
Now on to the bit that you’ve all been waiting for, the power. How much does the CX-5’s massive 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine make? Quite a lot, and it’s one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful crossovers in its segment coming in at 250 hp and 434 Nm of torque. The motor can also be found in the Mazda6, but this time around it’s working to power the CX-5, and it includes an all-wheel-drive system that’s exclusive to the turbo variant.
Following that, it’s still the same story with the transmission. We still get the same automatic transmission that enthusiasts have come to love thanks to its six gears and its crisp shifts and smooth performance.
Pricing
Mazda Philippines revamped its lineup for the CX-5, and unfortunately, to get the most powerful Mazda four-cylinder turbo motor into the country, we had to give up the 2.2-liter diesel variant. Moving forward, the compact crossover will only have gasoline engines on offer from Mazda Philippines, with only the top-of-the-line offering being the sole turbo-equipped variant for the country.
Mazda CX-5 AWD Turbo – P2,380,000
Mazda CX-5 AWD Sport – P1,990,000
Mazda CX-5 FWD Sport – P1,890,000
Lower variants will be fitted with Mazda’s naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter mill that still produces a hefty 188 hp and 252 Nm of torque, or the 2.0-liter with 152 hp and 200 Nm of torque, which are the same mills as found in the Mazda CX-8 and the Mazda3, respectively.
