Motorists, be advised: the Manila-Cavitex Expressway (Cavitex) is set to hike its toll fare for the R-1 segment beginning Thursday, May 12, 2022.

According to an advisory from the Cavitex Infrastructure Corporation (CIC), the toll for Class 1 vehicles will increase from P25 to P33, while Class 2 vehicle toll fee will increase from P50 to 67. Meanwhile, Class 3 vehicles will see the biggest increase, with the toll fee rising from P25 to a staggering P100. The increase covers the 6.48-kilometer R1 segment spanning Longos, Bacoor to the MIA Road exit in Parañaque.

This could be a huge blow to motorists using Cavitex regularly or for their daily commute. On top of still-rising gas and diesel prices, the increase in toll fees for the R-1 segment of Cavitex means more to pay in car-related expenses.

To make things even more difficult, the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) has given North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) officials the green light to increase toll fees on the expressway. The open system of NLEX will receive a price hike of P2.00, while the closed system will have a P0.34 per kilometer increase.

For clarity, NLEX’s open system covers Balintawak in Caloocan City to Marilao and Bulacan. The closed system, on the other hand, Bocaue and Santa Ines in Bulacan and Mabalacat City in Pampanga including Subic-Tipo.

With toll fees set to rise both in the north and south of Metro Manila, it seems motorists will have more on their minds as they bear the brunt of rising commodity prices. It remains to be seen whether other tollways will follow the lead of Cavitex and NLEX in implementing toll fee increases.

As private expressways, their management does have the prerogative to increase and decrease toll fees. The generated income from these fees largely goes to maintenance and improvement, but being private companies, we can expect that profit isn’t entirely out of the equation.
