Foton Motor Philippines will reportedly take its opportunity to launch the 2022 Thunder pickup truck at the upcoming Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) from April 7 to April 10, 2022.
From what we’ve seen in official teasers from the Chinese automotive brand’s local social media pages, Foton is likely using the MIAS stage to reassert itself in the heavily contested pickup truck segment.
With the new Foton Thunder, the Philippine market could gain another formidable utility vehicle with attractive features at a more affordable price point. The new Thunder, also known in other markets as Tunland G7, has gained a systemic makeover, making for a truck that’s decidedly different from the previous-generation model.
Foton gave the Thunder a new front end, with the new matte black grille spelling out the brand’s name and evoking Ford’s iconic Ranger Raptor grille design. A new “bionic” LED headlight system also deserves attention, featuring marked improvements in nighttime visibility. Below that, C-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) wrap around a pair of fog lamps. Body-colored bumpers complete the package for the Thunder’s redesigned front fascia.

With the new Foton Thunder, the Philippine market could gain another formidable utility vehicle with attractive features at a more affordable price point. The new Thunder, also known in other markets as Tunland G7, has gained a systemic makeover, making for a truck that’s decidedly different from the previous-generation model.
Foton gave the Thunder a new front end, with the new matte black grille spelling out the brand’s name and evoking Ford’s iconic Ranger Raptor grille design. A new “bionic” LED headlight system also deserves attention, featuring marked improvements in nighttime visibility. Below that, C-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) wrap around a pair of fog lamps. Other notable exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels, 4X4 decal styling, a matte black sports bar, and a tailgate to match the front end’s Foton logo design.
Meanwhile, the interior gets a modern upgrade, including possible features like a push-to-start ignition, floating touchscreen infotainment display, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Cabin comfort has been increased as well, with Foton covering most of the Thunder’s inside with premium leather material.
As for the engine, the Thunder could follow other markets with a single powertrain option: a 2.0-liter Aucan (4F20TC5) turbocharged diesel power plant delivering 161 hp and 390 Nm of torque. The engine pairs with a six-speed manual transmission.
Foton has yet to confirm specs and pricing, so we’ll have to wait until early April to find out what the brand has in store for the Thunder. MIAS will kick off on April 7, 2022 as it returns from a two-year hiatus from its in-person event. The show will feature a jam-packed lineup of exciting models from established and upstart brands alike.
