The crossover wars have gained another formidable fighter with the 2022 MG HS. Poised to challenge the sales dominance of the Ford Territory and Geely Coolray, the HS compact crossover could impress buyers with its European looks and turbocharged engine. Could MG and The Covenant Car Company (TCCI) have a winner on their hands?
Exterior
If you’ve been following MG for the past several years, you may know of the brand’s current design language. All that is present with the HS, albeit in a larger package. Its front fascia looks strikingly familiar with the dotted grille pattern and sleek LED headlights.
The black and chrome trim on the fog lamps also adds a nice touch. There’s more black and chrome on the sides, and slim fender flares make for great detail. Meanwhile, the aggressive rear end gets an integrated spoiler, a shark’s fin antenna, a silver finished skid plate, and a twin-exhaust design.

Interior and Technology

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a premium-looking black interior with lots of leather and suede with touches of red and silver trim. The bucket seats are particularly of note, as they’re unique to the HS in the MG lineup.
Behind the sporty, flat-bottom steering wheel is a massive 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, complemented by a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The MG HS rounds out its tech features list with a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, power front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power tailgate.
Power

The 2022 MG HS packs a 1.5 liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine that delivers 167 hp at 5,600 RPM and 250 Nm of torque between 1,700 and 4,400 RPM. MG paired this capable turbo with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) known as the Twin-Clutch Sportronic Transmission (TST). The HS is front-wheel-drive (FWD).
Safety

MG equipped the HS compact crossover with the standard safety fare, including an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). It also has active safety features like blind-spot detection and tire pressure monitoring. The electronic parking brake with auto-hold function also makes things safer and more convenient for the driver.
Price

MG has made two variants available for the new HS, namely the 1.5T Alpha and 1.5T Trophy. The brand priced both models competitively with an introductory price of P1,158,888 for the base model 1.5T Alpha and P1,208,888 for the top-spec 1.5T Trophy. Available colors include Pearl White, Pearl Black, Surfing Blue, Phantom Red, and Maya Brown. For more information and full specifications, visit our Car Guide for the 2022 MG HS.
