The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) welcomed the new year with a notable achievement, as it recently celebrated the completion of the first phase of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension viaduct.
The project started in September 2019, when LRMC and Bouygues Travaux Publics started civil works by installing pi-girders at the Parañaque City start point. The pi-girders covered the entire stretch of Dr. A. Santos Station until Redemptorist Station in Parañaque.
With the viaduct now complete, LRMC remains focused on electromechanical works, specifically laying the railway and installing the electrical systems. The new stations will also reportedly begin construction.
Phase 1 of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension project includes five stations: Dr. A Santos, Ninoy Aquino, Asiaworld, MIA, and Redemptorist. The total completion rate stood at 67.5% as of December 2021.
Upon completion, the project will benefit residents South of Manila, including Parañaque, Las Piñas, Cavite, and nearby cities and provinces. Some stations will also connect to public transport terminals for better integration and convenience. According to LRMC, it aims to complete the project by late 2024 or early 2025.

For now, we’ll have to celebrate each small victory on the way to a fully functional LRT-1 Cavite Extension. The project is a few years away from usability, but it will help countless commuters get in and around Metro Manila in due time.
