The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced that a southbound section of Roxas Boulevard will be closed for two to three months to give way to rehabilitation works. The road closure will be done to make way for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to conduct repairs on a damaged drainage structure in front of the Libertad pumping station in Pasay.
MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos has already inspected the Manila Container Terminal in Tondo to help prepare for the closure of Roxas Boulevard. The Abalos has also stated that he has already met with officials of the DPWH along with the Department of Transportation, Philippine Ports Authority, and with the International Container Terminal Services Inc. on the matter. This was to make a contingency plan for the road closure as these are the companies and government organizations that will be most affected and are key players in finding an alternative route for motorists and cargo trucks to take during the road closure.

One of the possible solutions that we are looking at is for the shipping containers to be carried on barges and transported from the MICT going to the Cavite Gateway Terminal in Barangay Tanza.

Abalos continues by stating that “We are studying all options to alleviate traffic gridlocks it would generate.” While the MMDA has yet to announce its full plan to find a way to alleviate traffic in the area for the road closure, the government agency still determining if a portion of the southbound direction of Roxas Boulevard near the HK Sun Plaza will need to be totally or partially closed to vehicular traffic.
With the amount of traffic these repairs will cause in the coming months, Abalos has appealed to the public for the understanding of the inconvenience the road closure will cause. The MMDA has yet to announce the official dates of the road closure and the start of the construction in the area.
