Mitsubishi has launched its first-ever all-electric crossover in China. Named the Airtrek, the model is built by GAC Mitsubishi Motors (GMMC), a partnership between Mitsubishi and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC).
The new Mitsubishi Airtrek shares its design and componentry with the GAC Aion V—another fully-electric crossover launched in 2020. Upon close inspection, one might conclude that the Airtrek is merely a rebadged Aion V. There are stark differences, however.
With the Airtrek, it gets Mitsubishi’s signature design language. It includes the Dynamic Shield front fascia featured across the brand’s entire lineup. It also features a rear lighting setup that evokes 2019’s Mi-Tech concept. Matching front and rear bumpers complete the look for the crossover.
Inside, Mitsubishi did a better job of separating itself from the Aion V’s design. The horizontal dashboard creates a modern feel, accompanied by a massive pair of screens. There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The latest bells and whistles are also available, including a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a host of other driver-assist features.

Underneath it all, the Airtrek is run by a front-mounted electric motor. It generates about 221 hp and 350 Nm, mated of course to an automatic transmission. The motor gets power from a 70-kWh, 350-volt lithium-ion battery that delivers a range of up to 520 km. Charging from 30 to 80 percent takes about 43 minutes with DC, while AC charging is also available.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek will be available in China beginning next year. It will retail between 210,000 to 240,000 yuan. When directly converted to Philippine pesos to around P1.66 to P1.9-million. Unfortunately, there are currently no plans to bring the all-electric crossover to other markets. While not impossible, this exclusive release means we may not see the Airtrek arrive in our market anytime soon or at all.
