Mazda wants in on the electric revolution. That much is clear, as the Japanese automaker appears to be pivoting towards hybrid technology. Most recently, Mazda Philippines announced hybrid versions of the Mazda3 compact sedan and CX-30 crossover. Now, the Japanese automaker looks ready to electrify one of its most popular models.
According to a report from Autocar, the next-generation Mazda MX-5, also known as the Miata, will get a mild-hybrid powertrain when it launches in 2024. The technology will reportedly come in the form of a SkyActiv-X mild-hybrid engine.
The 4-cylinder unit will gain a mini supercharger for pushing air into the cylinder. In addition, a spark-controlled compression ignition system will be present to increase performance while reducing emissions.
As for performance figures, Mazda has previously claimed that the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-X engine is 30% more powerful than the existing SkyActiv-G motor inside the current MX-5. Apart from this, the next-gen Miata should return better fuel economy ratings due to the hybrid system.
Mazda has committed to electrifying its entire lineup by 2030. That’s a tall order, but in light of its recent moves, we wouldn’t be surprised if the company achieves its goal with time to spare.
The fifth-generation Mazda MX-5 could arrive sometime in 2024. We expect the roadster to eventually reach our shores, given that the current model still sells in the Philippines.
For now, Mazda fans will have to settle for the non-hybrid MX-5. The fourth-gen Miata features a 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine that makes 184 hp and 205 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox is available.
The MX-5’s features include Mazda’s MZD Connect system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It also has keyless entry, rear parking sensors, a backup camera, and of course, a convertible roof. The 2021 Mazda MX-5 is yours starting at P1,980,000.
