Toyota has been busy this year, and its streak of prominent vehicle launches doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon. According to a report out of Thailand, the Japanese automaker is reportedly launching the all-new Vios (aka the Yaris Ativ) in the third quarter of 2022.
This is unlike any other update, as the Vios is reportedly switching to a new platform, particularly the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. Codenamed the D92A, the next-generation Vios will share its architecture with the Avanza and Raize.
Notably, Daihatsu developed the DNGA platform with the future in mind, meaning it’s capable of supporting electric and autonomous vehicles. Could the Vios soon get an all-electric version? That remains to be seen, but at least for now, the expected powertrain options include a new hybrid system. Reports indicate it could be a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with either the Toyota Hybrid System or Daihatsu’s e-Smart Hybrid technology.
Another possible engine option is a 1.2-liter four-cylinder gasoline motor mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). If and when the all-new Vios arrives in the Philippines, there’s a chance it could retain the 1.3-liter 1NR-FE and 1.5-liter 2NR-FE engines also found under the Avanza’s hood.

Toyota has yet to release the design or specs for the next-gen Vios, but we have word the brand is basing the new subcompact sedan’s look on the Daihatsu DN F-Sedan from 2017. That could mean the new Vios will be smaller in nearly every way than the outgoing model.
The all-new 2023 Toyota Vios is expected to debut in Thailand between July and September 2022. Toyota Motor Philippines has yet to declare its intention to continue producing the all-new model in the country. If local assembly stops with the outgoing model, imported Vios models could come with a higher sticker price down the line. We’ll see how it all unfolds as Toyota nears its launch window for the new Vios.
