Veteran drivers should know that going to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to get their licenses renewed is a chore. However, your good behavior on the road will get you something special, and the LTO will finally start rolling out licenses with a decade’s worth of validity. Imagine renewing your license only once every 10 years!

According to the LTO’s latest announcement on its Facebook page, the office will be issuing 10-year valid Philippine driver’s licenses to motorists without traffic violations starting October 28, 2021.

The LTO will be fulfilling the provision of Republic Act (RA) 10930, which covers driver’s license renewal by October 28, 2021, in the Central Office-Licensing Section, and the Quezon City Licensing Center (QCLC). Other branches of the LTO will soon follow in the National Capital Region (NCR) by November 3, 2021.

Motorists who have not incurred any traffic violations may request a 10-year validity period for their license, however, if any traffic violation has been incurred, the licensee will have to settle for the standard 5-year validity period.

Philippine Driver's License

LTO License Validity Announcement October 28, 2021

The post further states that all those who wish to renew have to go through the Comprehensive Driver’s education (CDE) and procure a CDE Certificate in order to renew. To take the CDE, you may download it at LTO’s portal, or visit LTO offices, and it is available in all LTO-Accredited Driving Schools.

Drivers outside of Metro Manila, however, will have to wait for further announcements before the LTO will start rolling out its 10-year validity to other regions.

The RA seeks to reduce the number of traffic violations on the road, and subsequently gives motorists motivation and a reward should they find themselves able to renew. Ten years is quite a long time. To put things into perspective, your license will last longer than a Philippine President’s term in office, which is six years. Just make sure that you have no record of traffic violations. Otherwise, erring motorists with a traffic violation can settle for the still-long five-year validity period.
